Select Tree Harvest
Definition
Harvest technique in pole staged or older stand. Multi-pass treatment over time. Utilized to harvest mature/over mature trees (or specific/undesirable trees). Used to modify vertical structure of stand (uneven age management) and create crown space to favour remaining trees. Helps create micro-habitat for natural regeneration and coarse woody debris.
Eligibility Criteria
- >75% of stand is pole staged or older
- Stands normally well rooted and wind firm with little existing wind throw (unless managed primarily for acceleration of height growth of tolerant planted seedlings)
- Residual stand to be harvested over long period (≥20 years) to create vertical structure (uneven age management) and change from intolerant to tolerant species if not already the case
Guidelines and Assessment Procedures
- Maximum tree removal: 10% of merchantable basal area per year
- Residual stand: minimum average 30% live crown ratio
- Monitoring at each intervention by qualified forestry professional
- Minimize damage; maximum 5% damage to remaining trees
- Residual stand appears wind firm
- Initial cuts distributed as uniformly as possible throughout stand
- Target: injured trees, trees with reduced live crown ratios, less wind firm trees, areas with advanced regeneration
